Sustainopreneur's Cafe

- Community of Sustainability Entrepreneurs

Yes, another night-shift in this intense period I have had since the publishing of the Wikipedia article on Sustianopreneurship. Seems to be changing time-zones in these periods.

Anyways, in the night dark, and in times of Diwali, I saw some light of something that has been in emergence lately, when I looked back on the earlier publications to be translated from English to English :). I have always been kinda fixated with Fibonacci Numbers (the only numbers in some patterns showing up in the non-Eucledian nature, right?). So - I figure out that the alliteration from my ISDRS paper on "C's" (see the library) from June 2007 could be extended.

Now, does these titles of the parts communicate something "intuitive", some kind of Reading Flow?

Can you see the "meaning" of it all, at this level not even adding short 30-50 word descriptors of the structured synopsis?

What are your associations? This is a guessing game, I know ;). I will fill this with 1. What will be the main content of the part, and 2. What questions does the part of the book aim to answer. So, these are the building blocks. Today!

And I know they will be changing. WIP and LIP, not RIP = Work in Progress, Life in Process, no Rest in Peace - yet! I am not done in this incarnation ;) => Constant Change, Constant Flux...

Like the Nature itself. In between Chaos and Order - Chaordic structuring? Ah, well, that's another quesition - but central: Don't be trapped by the linearity, remember the book will show up in different formats...especially in the Moderated Wiki version, right? :) !!?

Peace,
Anders

I was considering the merits of departing from the usual start-finish journey-method of book publishing. It would be a chance to consider having a mind-map type of content ecosystem, of course with wiki, web and semantics this is even better.

By allowing the content to grow in a wiki-fashion, thus opening itself up to web and semantics, it would then provide an exceptional resource from which to draw content to sculpt the book(s) - perhaps this adds complexity and extra time to the focus of delivering a book but it does leave a very interesting, useful and continually evolving artifact that is entwined with the book.

Thus the chapters outlined could be further evolved as constituents and members of category pages (i.e. the ontology) of a wiki. I don't think Ning does wiki however http://wikidot.com is pretty cool, you could still use Ning to ensure wide presence and community reach already invested then distill content from locations such as Ning forums via a core authoring team that evolves the wiki with you.

Hope that makes sense?

Hi,

Thanks for your input, and as seen on the frontpage of the group, you grasp the essence of my intended process. In fact, there was already a PBwiki established for the purpose, but I actually headed over for the Wikidot hosted wiki platform and agreed that it was better than PBwiki, so here it is!

All book parts now described in book blog! See feed on frontpage of the group. Or check filtered category http://andersabrahamsson.typepad.com/blog/business-with-a-cause---w...

Next steps: Writing a synopsis, then a full-fledged book proposal beyond writing up two sample chapters (piece by piece through the blog).

Anders

33 chapters?

Goals of writing the book are influenced by reading audience's ability to digest, must catch up with you for a chat to get your thinking on this when we have a moment, skype me when you have time.

Excuse me for my late reply, Ed. It really sent me to the reflection loop. If you view this monumental task aiming towards a "whole" to cover all three main questions:

"Why?" - with a deeper analysis of the institutional frames pointing to the (disruptive) need of reframing and reconceptualizing our institutions in the shadow of #collapsonomics (ref. e. g. c. f. Jared Diamond),

SLIDES 24-27 from ISDRS PRESENTATION June 12, 2007:

"What?" - with a two-bulleted main need for deepening the understanding of the concept through a ground-up approach collecting alot of case studies (see the Case Stories outline):

1. deepening the conceptualization creating a whole new framework of "sustainability innovations" with two conceptual models in focus, one an interpretative framework on SI, the other the SEEDS model http://seedsfund.com

SLIDE 58 from the same pres:

and

2. positioning the concept in the wider frame of the conceutual buzzword plethora of "the business case of sustainability", focusing the Hart/Millstein matrix as one leg of framing/positioning and the other rethinking the business and economics aspect of sustainopreneurship at large, from an institutional point of view - "purpose and process of business in the wider sphere of economics, social/societal/community setting, life at large and ecologics - in our shared universe in evolvement" (call it the deeper philosophy side of sustainopreneurship, then...)

SEE:

and

(from frameworks page) together with all the buzzwords that made the model emerge (chapter 3 in Stuart Hart's seminal book "Capitalism at the Crossroads", exhibit 3.3 - collecting the main concepts related to "business/sustainability")

Sustainopreneurship has dimensions explicity formulated in the definition in three of the four quadrants, but realized when revisiting the model that the fourth may be explored more (process/"tomorrow" - internal quadrant the one to the top left, as for now I have identified process/"today" - external the one to the bottom left, and purpose/"today"-"tomorrow" - internal+external (the two to the right) in the definition, more on that - this is just a brief note-to-self ... you see my need for 1. researching 2. writing it up and 3. english-to-english translations!).

lastly;

"How?" - here some new impact has been created in the flow of the wider sphere of "social media" with some latest contributions in "identity/branding-making" for both individuals and compaines, that needs to be addressed and explored (where this collaborative book experiment is a part of the big pic here!)

See the "red" tags here in what is my tag-o-sphere on twitter (http://tr.im/aalifestream) ...

together with

SLIDE 57 from presentation at ISDRS - "social media - DO-oriented - model in emergence":

With that said, ending up in a volume in the length of a No Logo / Klein 500+ pages pocket, does not inflict and/or conflict on the possible other publishing outputs for "chunks and pieces" on the project. View the whole project above as an attempt to collect something like a fractal model - that you can take a piece of the whole and still getting value of the content.

All 33 chapters aims to be stand-alone eBooklets with a short intro and outro to connect to other parts, where you get enough value on chapter level to read stand-alone in its own solitude. Thinking linear and trans-scribing thought-streams ("stream of consciousness") from the hypertextual wiki-semantics forces me to communicate deeply rooted all the most important aspects found - and to be found! - of sustainopreneurship in the process.

In the bottom line, we view the challenge to rethink the "social construction" surrounding the format called "book"!

With that said, I also plan - in parallel - to write up a "changethis-alike" http://changethis.com manifesto of 25 pages (12 with images, 12 with text), and also to transform that manifesto to a standard presentation in non-standard format (http://prezi.com - VERY cool to get outside the trap of linearity in an otherwise slideshow oriented world...) - and GET ON STAGE, do u see my (greater...) pic, Ed :) ?

1. Manifesto - the branches (25 pages)
2. Chapters-as-eBooklets - one singular branch in focus (16 pages each á 300 words-a-page + illustrations)
3. The Book - the Whole Tree at leaf level (~550 pages)

The rest we take in a Skype :).

Peace,
Anders

PS. See my last tweets on a complicating factor added beyond your feedback, together with another feedback I got some days after - actually ending up in focusing deeper to take one of the branches above to the deepest level in the PhD Dissertation format: see last update on http://andersabrahamsson.typepad.com/blog/2009/03/bookprocess-writi... - where this reply of yours is mentioned in the update from today :). And yes, ending up here - slide 61 from the "Researching Sustainopreneurship" presentation I did at ISDRS - International Sustainable Development Research Society's 13th Annual Conference;

An aim that needs to be written up in more detail as well :) !

Peace, A.

Tree fractals tend to force one into the hierarchy of source nodes i.e. how many trees do you know that have more than one trunk with roots?

The fact that we have both a modern digital world that is interconnected with roots everywhere and an ever more obvious need to respect and give consideration to previously disregarded, neglected, ignored or just plain overlooked 'stuff' (not wanting to pick on any one thing right now) tells us that one of the aspects of sustainability is multiple root systems i.e. not so much many dependencies, more so harmony through cooperation and networks as opposed to islands and dictators ;-)

Yes we must skype soon, looking forward to it.

Maybe more like this, then :) ?

Now, when we talk about the underlying connections in "real world", and a reflection of "something" called a "book", there is always a degree of separation we cannot overcome without diving in to the reality ourselves. A book in its linear fashion in the end always end up as interweb'd and embedded as "knowledge" in our nervous system, equally hyperlinked. The fractal tree is a close metaphor to just go from this interconnected networked fashion of sustainability/world into text structure. Where the wiki is the interface in between the blog chuncks and PDF parts ending up in a full fledged book.

Crafting out offerings now for sponsors and donators who want to support the book project, skype beyond that!

Peace,
Anders
