I saw the post (haven't had a chance to read it yet)...but I think you're spot on - if we can't make the basic day-to-day choices to live sustainably, how on earth are we going to be sufficiently engaged and informed as voters and political animals? We vote with our dollars much more effectively than at any ballot box.
Great to have you participating in OurWorld, Anders!
I'm pleased to be part of this network for a number of reasons, primarily as it is populated by motivated people with a similar outlook. For me this is where 'connection clubs' such as ecademy or linkedin fall down. I became aware that many of my connections in both of those networks were simply adding numbers to their connections without adding any real value. What's the point? For me connections must be with like minded people in whatever line of business of lifestyle they happen to occupy. Personally I prefer more rather than less diversity.
I hope that we can build this network into a vibrant and supporting community. For my part, please feel free to seek me out. I'm involved primarily in renewable energy and primarily in the Portuguese speaking world now (www.sunwoven.com). I am also involved in ecotourism (www.ethicalescape.com), we were one of the very first ecotourism promotion businesses on line. This is something I do not spend as much time on as as I should, so I throw this out there, I am beginning to look for assistance with the development of this project.
I wish you all success and hope that I can help some of you along the way, and that you can support me along the way also.
I totally agree. It has to be treated like a garden - there needs to be a gardener, being there to water the flowers, otherwise it will turn out to an unfocused djungle and wildfire-spreading weed everywhere making the whole sub-part of the ecosystem implode and die. I saw this at Ecademy, and left ages ago.
The diversity and pluralism coming with individuals that have so many differencies in their individual projects, but share a common perception that starting up a business to change the world towards the sustainable, have a much greater promise to actually DO something! Especially together...
I have been quite idle as a gardener - or rather Café Host - but I am slowly seeing the option to change this, now with so many other stuff happening making it possible for me to daily interact with this community I created in the Big Cloud of the One Machine called the Web :).
Nice to have you here, Simon!
Top three priorities:
1. What do you need to go on?
2. Where to source it?
3. - and if you get maybe one more to support your ideas and businesses beyond this virtual intro thread, at least in conversation and exchanging ideas, maybe to move the thread to present your projects in the next part of the flow, the action group here on the café for more deeper interaction in this little virtual incubator?
OK, I created ethicalescape.com a few years ago, as a result of staying in a very nice holiday complex in Colombia (before I knew any better) and experiencing the extremes that such a project creates, enhancing the rich and undermining the poor. Altough this particular tourism development has moved towards ethical tourism, there are many problems remaining. People have changed the way they live to fit in with the tourist, land is no longer being worked in the same way, the local indiginous culture has undoubtedly been affected and many more changes as a result of tourism money and experience.
So, ethicalsescape was born and has been run without profit in mind since then. However, there are now a number of so called 'eco-tourism' agents looking to make money out of tourists, without benefitting the places the tourists travel to. This is wrong and goes against eveything sustainable and ethical travel stands for.
My goal with ethicalescape now is to turn it into a force of support for those communities and regions who could really benefit. I want ethicalescape to make a profit, to be re-invested in worthwhile projects around the world.
I want to create a company board to develop ethicalescape on this basis and I'm asking anyone with the same vision and a bit of time to help me explore how best to do this....
a quick intro, more an exercise of 'just doing it'...
it is great to mesh with others into new forms.. who's to know what...
my thread is about building sustainable communities: nurturing both the group and the individual...at the same time.. both are just as important as each other...
i like to experiment with processes to create experiences ... so that we can flow together more as O-N-E.
I love to help people to navigate into meaningful futures... home grown.. and world-ready!
one venture currently in action: themelaninpartnership.com. This is a social entreprise grounded in Brixton, South London. We support young people to help other young people to avoid crime or get out of crime, and to do something life-enhancing. Here is something we were proud to have helped to facilitate into being:
Social Innovation from Destructive to Constructive, towards Sustainable. Melanin in a Nutshell.
For increased presence for everyone participating, I have enlarged the thread to be a forum in itself - this was a great and short intro for this thread, but if you go ahead and ask the community what you miss for Melanin to make it flourish even more, and see where we can assist?
