My commitment - to elevate the concept of sustainability to include our unique cultural identities in the face of globalisation, to only produce what is respectful of the planet and only in numbers that have dedicated consumers. My passion - to do all of this based in, and for the benefit of, Scotland. To take what I have learned and willingly share to make the world a better place than how I came into it, yet remain open to the suggestions and knowledge of brilliant minds to improve everyone's circumstances.
My passion is to combine business success with social change.
We live in a world of consumerism, that won't shift.
Consumers want things, buy things, like buying things
So developing businesses which cater for the demands of these consumers, while at the same time using the profits to help with social change, has to be a good thing.
Imagine the feeling, knowing that when you are having a good time, that someone else is having a good time because of you.
It's a win win situation
So this is what I am working to develop - this win win situation.
A business with a social conscience. A business which helps the disadvantaged. Not by just givinga few quid to someone. But by giving them the tools to make their own lives.
The tools that those people who 'have it' take for granted.
Good health, self-confidence, a will to live, a reason to live. A reason to enjoy life.
And sorry for the plug - we call this The Cafe PHI Project
The Cafe with a Conscience - coming to your doorstep soon.
You don't have to excuse your plug, because the spirit of the project set at the lines before the plug makes it resound 100 percent with the purpose of the Café!
For me - if PHI is working on commercial conditions as a formal business, but using creative business organizing as a means to give services that strengthens health for those who can pay, and also for those who can't (see e. g. Aravind Eyecare in India for a complimentary business model!), then PHI is by definition applying sustainopreneurship in the field Strengthening of Health.
Most welcome, Andrew!
Add a thread in the Group PRACTICE: Sustainopreneurship in Action if you want to, for breakthrough updates in your project (like the opening in Jan 2008!), and a feed will be streamed into the Café Main Page for stakeholder findings and serendipities. If your concept is able to locally translate and adapt globally, I know some billions of friends in the waiting for your proliferation...

Greetings, sustainopreneurs. I'd like to invite any of you who might be interested to the community I recently co-founded, called OurWorld (not to be confused with "MySpace"). OurWorld was created by and for people who want to share ideas and information about using our purchasing and investment power to support sustainable, socially responsible business practices. I hope you'll visit, join, and participate. The url is www.ourworldcommunity.ning.com.
I joined OurWorld - membership pending approval ;).
As I understand, OurWorld focusing two behaviours out of three with the main governance power towards a sustainable world - consumption (demand) and investing (affecting both demand and supply)? The third power - the political one where you vote - crumbles when it comes to changing powers, don't you think?
Well put, Anders. In a sense, the market is the most democratic mechanism at our disposal. We can effect real change much closer to the sources of our problems by altering our own behavior in the areas of consumption and investing than in waiting around for elections and trying to understand policies (although those things remain important). We have to control the things we can control.
we have a big sphere of influence in the globalized economy - thus the old idea now going mainstream with fair trade - good step, isn't it? but the implications are far wider than so - all things we consume and invest - time - energy - creativity etc - are moving us towards a sustainable world (but sure, the political rule and governance needs to be there, but they are like the referee in a hockey match - only placing the rules of the game and maintaining it through regulations, and sometimes the cup organized creates an incentive to make something good - but it is the hockey players that needs to get it into the net in intense teamworking, isn't it?)
blogged about it over at (y)our community, ourworld!
